If you’re an Etsy seller, you probably heard the word Marmalead* by now.
Why? Because Marmalead was the first-ever SEO tool designed specifically FOR ETSY.
If you’re aren’t maximizing your Etsy traffic, you need to rethink your life. Like right now.
Traffic MATTERS, and it's literally the difference between a shop that steadily grows, and one that closes after three months (because the owner FULLY gave up even tho traffic is SUPER easy to fix)... ⬇️
Any traffic expert (who knows what they're doing) will tell you that the first thing that will get you MOAR traffic is a KEYWORD TOOL.
This is a piece of software that tells you what words are trending (read: SELLING OUT) on whatever platform you sell on.
But today we're gonna focus on Marmalead.
They have a super long 14-day FREE trial and you can do A HELLUVA LOT of damage in that time...Your Etsy traffic will thank you for it!
Where Can I Get a Maramlead Free Trial?
Right here! Marmalead gave me this 14-day free trial specifically for readers like you 👍
During the trial, you can use Marmalead’s premium features for two weeks!
Prepare yourself, it’s gonna be amazing what you accomplish in just 14 days. ⬇️
Why Should I Use Marmalead?
I suggest you choose the tool that fits YOU...and there’s no right or wrong answer. I know you probably want me to just say "do this and stop agonizing about it" but it's important that you decide for yourself...
You're an entrepreneur now, it's time to make decisions like one. No one's gonna build an epic biz for you, but YOU.
Bottom line: Everyone has their own unique set of needs for their Etsy store, so the perfect tool is the one that you choose.
HOWEVER...Marmalead was the first EVER Etsy SEO tool on the scene. So they got what you WANT. (And what you need, lol).
Back in 2015, when I opened shop, I used Marmalead to make my first 500 sales in less than 6 months! And I did it all with SEO and (very) mediocre pictures -- so YES, SEO can make a HUGE difference. ⬇️
The THREE most important things you should do during your free Marmalead trial ⬇️
➊ Choose your TEN most popular listings on Etsy and COPY them
These should be ten items that either get the most visits, sales, or both.
Now here’s the key: MAKE A COPY of all 10 items. Press that “duplicate” button -- don’t edit your existing SEO on the original item!
If edit your original listing, it will CRASH your traffic, and we don’t want that!
Making a copy means we’ll be able to track your SEO results because we can compare the old version to the COPY (and see which one does better).
With me? OK!
Now that you made a COPY of your 10 most popular items, connect your Etsy shop to Marmalead and look at the GRADES it gives your 10 most popular items.
See what Marmalead says you need to correct and make those changes on the item you COPIED. So that means you’ll have 1 original listing and 1 Marmalead-optimized listing (for all 10 of your most popular items!)
➋ Gather up as many tags as you can for your items in one place
You can collect a bucket of tags with Marmalead’s storm feature. I use Evernote to keep track of tags for each category of my shop.
Find TONS of tags that you’re not currently using. I like to do storm searches for holidays that relate to my items, gifting occasions, and categories. Typically I search for words like “sarcastic t-shirt”, “funny mother’s day gift”, or “funny office mug”.
Here's a list of storm buckets you should create for your items ⬇️
✅ Search for each category of items you have in your shop, and create 1 storm for each category. (For me, that was mugs, art prints, digital downloads, and totes).
✅ Do a storm for the big holidays that sell best on Etsy. If you need to know what's coming up (that sell big -- because not all holidays do!) just use our Trend reports here to see what's exploding right now.
✅ Think about WHO will buy your item. Is it moms? Sisters? Men, women, college students...Parents for their kids? Make at least one storm using the words that describe your customer.
✅ Think about WHY people buy your item. Is it given as a gift? Do people buy it as a treat for themselves? Is your item functional and it's helping to solve a problem? Make at least one storm about your item's "why".
Once you’ve done this, create yourself a ROLODEX of tags! Your Rolodex will serve as an index that you can come back to and re-use, again and again!
(Note: a Rolodex is not an expensive wristwatch, it is a series of organized cards that will change your life. Seriously kids. Stop being born in the 2000's).
➌ Make a list of long-tail keywords
When you put a word into Marmalead’s search box, there are TONS of Long-tail keyword ideas at the bottom of the page. ⬇️
These are the keywords that really narrow down searches and bring in the moolah!
These LTK’s are really killing it on Etsy Ads right now, and we’ve seen sellers get their items on the first page of search just because they use TONS of LTK’s.
So make sure you create a nice meaty list of LTK’s that apply to your items! Add them to your Rolodex, under “Tags that SELL my items!”
If I only learn one thing from Marmalead, what should it be?
Which LONG TAIL keywords work best for a shop like yours.
(Read more about LTK here and see why they’re vitally important for sales on Etsy.)
Essentially long-tail keywords are a string of words strewn together. If you sell gold jewelry, using the tag "gold jewelry" is accurate but VERY broad.
However, if you go more in DEPTH about your jewelry - using a tag like "delicate 18" gold necklace" now you have enough information to make a long-tail keyword.
Marmalead takes the guesswork out of describing your items. It shows you exactly what kind of long-tail keywords WORK for shops like yours. If you get anything out of your free trial, LTK's are the thing you should get!
How long will it take before I see a difference in my traffic?
That depends -- are you selling something super popular like jewelry or craft supplies? Then it may take just DAYS before you start to see a traffic jump.
But if you’re selling something that fewer people search for (like, say Dollhouse furniture) then it’s going to take a couple of months before you get the full effect of SEO changes.
Bottom line tho: if you’re selling something TRENDY that people WANT (even if it’s not crazy popular), then you should get more sales and traffic regardless.
Remember that SEO isn’t the ONLY way your shop gets traffic. People might see your item and scroll right past if it’s not interesting enough. Make sure customers WANT what you GOT. (Because NO amount of SEO will make ho-hum items sell!)
How can I tell if my Marmalead changes worked?
Ah well, that’s the magic of the COPYING process!
If you copied your 10 most popular listings like I told you to (so you have 1 original and 1 Marmalead optimized version of your 10 most popular items)...then this is easy!
Wait 30 days after you created your Marmalead copies. Then compare your original listing to the copy.
Because your original might be quite old (and have a lot of existing visits) we just want to compare your LAST 30 DAYS.
Look at your original listing and your Marmalead listing in your listing manager. Choose the “view stats for last 30 days option”...Then compare away!
It’s likely that you’ll notice MORE visits and MORE sales on the Marmalead version, that’s how you know it’s working!
*Affiliate Disclosure + Deets
Yup, this article has affiliate links in it. If you click those links, I get a small commission, but it doesn't cost you anything extra. Affiliate links help me keep this blog FREE for you to read. (It costs $700 a month just for this blog to exist).
Before you go screaming, "everyone on the internet is just here to SELL me something! Screw you people, I can't trust anyone!"
Let me just tell you the REAL TEA...🫖
You may have noticed from my rant about how much I HATE Shopify (here), that I don't just affiliate with anyone who's willing to pay me.
In fact, Shopify offered me MORE $$ than any other affiliate ever has. And I still wrote this article about exactly how much I don't like Shopify, complete with NO affiliate links.
So when I decided to go in-depth about Marmalead with you, it's because I love Marmalead and they're responsible for making my Etsy shop LOTS of money.
I HATE that YouTube (and Insta...and Facebook...) have become a money grab for anyone with an affiliate link, and I bet you do too.
So I figured, hey...I'm gonna just treat you the way I want to be treated.
And when I use a tool I really like, that has serious life-changing abilities...Well, I'm gonna share that tool. Whether they affiliate with me or not.
On THAT note, I make an effort to share ALL the tools I like, even if they WON'T affiliate with me (Corjl, I'm looking at you). These articles showcase a tool that will help you out in a BIG way, but for whatever reason, they don't do affiliate relationships.
But it's a tool that could CHANGE your life, so I share it anyway.
If you're curious about which tools I LOVE (and hate)...You can see them all rounded up right here:
